The Impact of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Report on Nursing
The nursing profession takes the lion’s share in the healthcare sector. In the USA alone, there are approximately three million nurses (Institute of Medicine, 2011). They influence health care, and their scope of practice is affected by many factors like reports and policies. For instance, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) report has impacted various aspects of the nursing profession in many ways to the extent that it has compelled nurses to change practice to achieve goals indicated in the document. This essay aims to discussing the impact of the IOM report on nursing education, practice, and leadership.
The IOM report has affected the future of nursing practice in many ways since it discusses the importance of nurses. According to it, the latter fulfil their potential in quality healthcare delivery to patients, improving the health status of the population (Institute of Medicine, 2011). Furthermore, the report asserts that transforming their practice enhances primary care provision. As a result, nursing professionals are likely to abide by the report findings. Another important message is the recommendation for full partnership with both physicians and other specialists in the provision of care. Nurses should collaborate to meet all patients’ needs (Martin & Finn, 2011). It affects nursing practice because this profession relies on evidence-based research, and since this report is a source of reliable information, adopting its recommendations is an important requirement. This report has an impact on the future of nursing in the field of primary care provision since its adoption will enhance teamwork and inter-professional collaboration. I will have to transform my practice by accepting the multidisciplinary approach to meet the goals of this report. Although teamwork is currently available in primary care delivery, the adoption of the report will further improve the situation.
Additionally, the report has influenced nursing primary care practice due to its recommendation for the adoption of technology such as telehealth nursing. Currently, they are encouraged to use efficient innovations such as electonic health records in practice (Collen & Ball, 2015). Technology is going to change the review and acquisition of information, communication with other professionals and patients, as well as clinical activities (Institute of Medicine, 2011). I must change the way I operate in primary care delivery, especially from manual handling of patients’ information to the technological use of computers among other tools to achieve report’s goals. For instance, I should refuse from the use of paper records in favor of electronic ones.
Furthermore, recommendations and findings of the report have an impact on nursing education. Institute of Medicine (2011) claims that the latter is the only platform for continuous learning in this esteemed profession. The American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation (2012) reiterates that continuous education is a requirement for nurses. As a result of a clear analysis of this report, one can deduce that it is inclined towards the value of a high level of education, especially the acquisition of a degree in nursing. Currently, most organizations prefer nurses being Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN). It is an entry level for job positions (Institute of Medicine, 2011). Furthermore, the report shows that the payment of professional nurses goes hand in hand with the level of education. Its provisions are likely to make nurses attain the highest degree through continuous learning. Its message is clear that professionals should achieve high levels of training and education through improved systems that are capable of promoting continuous academic progression.
Currently, nurses are encouraged to achieve continuous education before and after they have received practicing licenses from their professional organizations. Furthermore, universities now offer degree programs, and many people are enrolled. Additionally, the demand for BSNs in the field is increasing since those with higher levels of education have priority in the job market. It is true that those with higher levels of education receive better pays, and it does not only concern the nursing profession, butt also many others. The future of nursing education is likely to change because the time may come when the profession will have many scholars with degree certificates and beyond. Therefore, the IOM has substantially affected nursing education.
Finally, the IOM report has a significant impact on the nursing leadership role. Since the latter starts from the bedside to the boardroom, the report motivates practicing and young nurses to assume leadership positions through mentorship, leadership programs in the profession, political engagement, and the involvement in policymaking processes (Institute of Medicine, 2011). According to the IOM report, nurses are likely to adopt suggestions and receive leadership training and mentorship. Currently, management and leadership courses are offered at all levels of education. Nurses are supposed to collaborate with other healthcare professionals such as physicians in redesigning the provision of care (Institute of Medicine, 2011). It shows the need for professionals in the field to assume leadership roles at the multidisciplinary level. Currently, nurses lead multidisciplinary teams in health care facilities (Marquis & Huston, 2009). The report is going to stimulate this aspects since nurses continue acquiring leadership roles in schools and practicing areas, some of which are accredited with certificates.
In conclusion, the IOM report has many findings and recommendations that can affect the future of nursing. Since the profession relies on a rich base of evidence, it is likely to adopt report’s recommendations for inter-professional partnership in care delivery in addition to the adoption of technology. Currently, nurses are encouraged to utilize technology in quality care provision. The future is likely to be marred with drastic changes since all professionals will use technology in practice. Moreover, nursing will have many workers with the highest level of education given report’s recommendations are adopted. Finally, the IOM report has also an impact on nurses’ leadership roles due to its call for nurses to assume such positions in the healthcare industry.
