Thinking About Diversity and Inclusion

The process of globalization is an important feature of the modern world. That is why, there are a lot of people with different cultural identities, however they co-exist together. Therefore, cultural diversity is a very topical question, which should be solved. The main idea of cultural diversity is that all cultural identities should be maintained and appreciated, or it is better to say, each person should maintain its own cultural identity and respect the other ethnic groups. There are a lot of dimensions of cultural diversity. The entire range of these dimensions can be divided into two groups such as primary and secondary. Primary dimensions of cultural diversity include state, race, age, etc. On the other hand, the religion, education, family status, first language, and others are included in secondary dimensions of cultural diversity. For example, personally I belong to different groups such as a group of people, whose native language is English, a group of Americans, a group of men, a group of students, and other groups.

Besides, there are diversity and inclusion, which are considered to be different concepts. In fact, diversity includes the entire range of dimensions, which can be applied to identify and differentiate people. Diversity means that we should appreciate of people’s differences in gender, age, native language, ethnicity, sexual orientation, social state, religion, and other. “Cultural diversity, or multiculturalism, is based on the idea that cultural identities should not be discarded or ignored, but rather maintained and valued” (“What Is Cultural Diversity”). On the other hand, inclusion means that we should appreciate and support other humans. Inclusion focuses its attentions on individual’s needs in order to create conditions for full realization of human potential. “Inclusion should be reflected in an organization’s culture, practices and relationships that are in place to support a diverse workforce. In simple terms, diversity is the mix; inclusion is getting the mix to work well together” (“What Is Diversity & Inclusion”)

Obviously, respect for all possible differences between employees at the same workplace and inclusion of each employee are very important in order to implement the employees’ potential and to create an effective workplace. In our daily life, we have a lot of contacts with different people, including contacts with collaborators. In fact, these contacts will not be effective, if we do not respect their differences. That is why, it is very important to provide training in order to stimulate and encourage diversity and inclusion at the workplace. Inclusion is one of the most important conditions required for effective job performance. In fact, we need to contact with many people in the process of work, as it is impossible to perform some job without friendly relations with our collaborators. Therefore, diversity and inclusion can be considered as the main preconditions of effective company.

As it was mentioned, I belong to different groups, however, I do not have a great experience with culture differences at the workplace. In addition, I try to appreciate and respect for all people’s differences. As all human beings are equal and have the same rights. Obviously, no one should limit the process of achieving the perfection, but try to value, appreciate, and respect all people’s differences. In such case, we will achieve diversity and inclusion.
